The first piece in a 2-part series, "BLACKLISTED PT.1" is a passionate conversation showing the disturbing action that book banning as well as information obfuscation has in classrooms across the United States. After moving to a new highschool where information wasn't hand picked to fit a certain political agenda. I realized the devastating implications that the process of prioritizing censorship of information and homogeneity in society had on the erasure of individuality. The syringe of black fluid being injected is representative of the very action of silencing information. I wanted the piece to tell of how truly disturbing this system of control really is. As well I believe the saying "blood on their hands" was fitting within this scenario as the clear liquid showcases the blood that is invisible to the district’s eyes; however, is seen by those from an outside perspective. My use of the style of hyperrealism is to open the discussion to those who don't have an academic understanding of art. As more modernistic styles of work tend to not speak to those without an art background. I wanted to showcase this problem to as many people as possible to bring awareness to the effect this has on the new generation of kids. To further bring conversation to the work, the QR code leads to a list of banned books across the US showcasing the true widespread impact of this system.
